Columbus Day: A Rogue Holiday

Posted by Jack Burton in Holidays

It amazes me every year when Columbus Day rolls around and is recognized as a holiday. Calling Columbus Day a holiday is blasphemous to all of the legitimate holidays on the calendar. It could be a real holiday if the person that it is recognized for truly was the first to discover the land he has been given credit, but we know that this is not so. Yet, we still close down shop every year in celebration for a faux pioneer.

The only meaning for this “holiday” is a day off for the privileged; government employees. It is sad that a day off from work is so important that a holiday is created under such poor pretenses. It is so important for a day off that if a holiday lands on a Sunday, then it must be observed on the following Monday, or if it occurs on a Saturday, then they want the prior Friday off too. Forget the fact that they are always off on the weekend, but that’s not good enough if one of their weekend days happen to be a holiday.

Let’s call Columbus Day what it truly is; “A Day Off Just Because I Don’t Want To Work Day”. This way it will have a more valid purpose. As it it stand now, it is just a facade.
